A Kindle sleeve is the simplest protection you can buy: a padded pouch that the Kindle slides into and out of, with nothing attached to the device itself. It is also the accessory most often bought on a size label that turns out to mean little. "Fits 6-inch Kindles" describes the screen, not the pouch, and the difference between a sleeve that fits and one that is a struggle can be a few millimeters. This page compares sleeves with cases and folio covers, lines up published Kindle dimensions — including the 2026 Paperwhite — against the interior sizes sellers state, and explains when a sleeve is the right answer.
The short answer
- Choose a Kindle sleeve if your Kindle spends its time in a bag and you read it bare, or if you already use a case and want a second layer for travel.
- Choose a case or folio cover instead if you want something on the device while you read: a flap that wakes it, grip, a stand or a strap. See the Kindle case buying guide, the Kindle Paperwhite cover guide and the Paperwhite case fit guide.
- Size by numbers, not by the screen label. Compare the device's outer size (below) with the sleeve's stated interior size and leave some margin. The 2026 Paperwhite is 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm (secondary sources).
- Own a Scribe or Oasis? Different footprint from a Paperwhite — see the size table. Scribe owners: also see the Scribe case guide.
Sleeve vs case and folio cover
A sleeve and a case solve different problems. A case or folio cover becomes part of the Kindle: it changes how you hold it, how it sleeps and how it charges. A sleeve is a container: it protects the device when it is not in use and then gets out of the way. That is why a sleeve is not a substitute for a folio for most readers, and why it can be the better choice for some.
| Sleeve | Case or folio cover | |
|---|---|---|
| When you are reading | Takes the Kindle out; no protection while in use | On the device the whole time; adds grip, maybe a stand |
| In a bag | Protects against scratches and knocks; screen is inside | Folios cover the screen; shells do not |
| Fit to model | Looser; can fit several Kindles if the interior is large enough | Tight; must match the model year |
| Auto wake/sleep | None | Usually, on folios |
| Weight and bulk | In the bag, not on the device | Adds weight to the device itself |
| Charging | Take it out to charge | May need a cutout; dock limits apply |
| Reusability | Often carries over when you upgrade, if the size still fits | Usually has to be replaced with each new model |
That last row is the sleeve's real advantage. Cases are cut to the exact model year; Amazon's own 2024 fabric cover is listed as fitting the 2024 release only, and its 2026 knit cover names 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft only. A sleeve with some slack might carry on through an upgrade, as long as you check the numbers. For the case and cover side of this decision, see our Paperwhite case guide and the Kindle Paperwhite cover guide.
Sleeve sizes by Kindle model
These are the published outer dimensions of the models most people own. They are the numbers to compare against a sleeve's interior. All are from Amazon's listings or press coverage, except where marked. Refreshed October 19, 2026.
| Model | Screen | Outer size (mm) | Weight | Sleeve note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle 2022 / 2024 (basic) | 6-inch | 157.8 × 108.6 × 8.0 | 158 g | The 2024 model matches the 2022 size, per Digital Trends. Fits smaller "6-inch" pouches. |
| Kindle 2026 (basic) | 6-inch | Thickness 6.8; width and height not confirmed against Amazon US (one UK retailer lists 152.7 × 107.9) | 140 g (WIRED, Engadget); aluminum version about 20 g heavier (Engadget) | Thinner than 2024; confirm final W×H before buying a snug pouch. |
| Paperwhite 2018 (10th gen) | 6-inch | 167 × 116 × 8.18 | 182 g | One reviewer on a "6-inch" neoprene pouch listing calls it too tight for this model. |
| Paperwhite 2021 (11th gen) | 6.8-inch | 175.2 × 124.6 × 8.1 | 205 g | Named on several 6-7 inch sleeve listings. |
| Paperwhite 2024 (12th gen) | 7-inch | 176.7 × 127.6 × 7.8 | 211 g | Colorsoft Signature Edition (2024) has the same size, 219 g. |
| Paperwhite 2026 | 7-inch | 174.7 × 126.8 × 6.8 (secondary sources) | 204 g (WIRED); Signature ~229 g (secondary) | Slightly smaller footprint than 2024; a roomy 6-7 inch sleeve that fits 2024 should have margin — not hands-on verified. |
| Oasis (10th gen, 2019) | 7-inch | 159 × 141 × 3.4-8.4 (grip side thickest) | 188 g | Short but wide; check the sleeve's interior width. |
| Scribe 2022 / 2024 | 10.2-inch | 230 × 196 × 5.7-5.8 | 433 g | Needs a 10-inch tablet sleeve; one MoKo listing is made for it. |
| Scribe 2025 / Colorsoft | 11-inch | 245 × 189 × 5.4 | 400 g | No sleeve listing checked for this size. |
The outliers are the Oasis, which is short but wide (159 × 141 mm), so its width is the number to check, and the Scribe, which is a much larger device. A "6-7 inch" sleeve is not going to fit a Scribe and is not meant to.
2026 Paperwhite dimensions — source note
The 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm figures come from secondary write-ups (Xataka, Case Society Co, Read with Pro) that cite Amazon product data. We have not pulled them from a live Amazon US technical card ourselves, and we have not measured a sleeve against a 2026 device. US buyer reports will not exist until after the October 28, 2026 ship date.
Reading the interior size
A sleeve listing usually gives an external size and an internal size. The external size tells you how much room it takes in your bag; the internal size tells you whether the Kindle fits. The numbers in listings are not always reliable, and at least one seller states that its sizes were measured by hand and "there will be some deviation." Here is what the listings we looked at say, set against the 2024 Paperwhite (still the best-documented reference; the 2026 model is a few millimeters smaller):
| Sleeve (type, as listed) | Stated interior | Spare length / width vs 2024 Paperwhite | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| MoKo 6-7 inch, padded, dual pockets and pen loop | 7.87 × 5.9 in (about 200 × 150 mm) | About 23 mm / 22 mm | Names 6.8-inch Paperwhite 2021, Oasis and many older Kindles; roomy. |
| MoKo 6-7 inch, nylon, dual pockets | 7.48 × 5.51 × 0.59 in (19 × 14 × 1.5 cm) | About 13 mm / 12 mm | Names the Paperwhite 2021 and the Colorsoft Signature Edition (2024); snugger, with 15 mm of depth. |
| kwmobile 6-inch neoprene pouch | 6.7 × 4.7 × 0.8 in (17 × 12 × 2 cm) | Negative: shorter than the device | A reviewer calls it too tight for even the 2018 Paperwhite (167 × 116 mm). |
Two rules of thumb follow from the arithmetic, though neither is a tested guarantee. First, you want at least a centimeter of spare length so you can slide the Kindle in and out without a fight, and a few millimeters of spare width. Second, depth matters when you add a case or screen protector; the nylon sleeve's stated depth of 15 mm is plenty for a bare Kindle but modest for a thick folio. And if the Oasis is yours, note that the 141 mm width is just over the nylon sleeve's stated 140 mm interior, so for that model the roomier sleeve is the safer bet (we did not find a listing that gives Oasis-specific interior numbers).
Materials
| Material | What sellers say | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Neoprene | The kwmobile pouch listing describes a lightweight, water-resistant neoprene and elastane mix with a zipper. | Stretchy and slim, but the stretch is limited; the size label is the thing to check. Often has no pockets. |
| Nylon with flannel lining | MoKo describes a water-resistant nylon exterior, flannel lining and a sealed zipper. | Light and wipeable; lining quality varies. |
| Padded polyester | MoKo describes an "anti-splash" polyester exterior, soft lining and thick padding. | More padding for knocks; also more bulk. |
| Felt, canvas and leather | Other styles exist; we did not check specific listings. | Leather and felt look good and age well; protect less from splashes. |
Padding and lining matter more than the outer fabric. A good sleeve is soft on the inside so that it does not scratch the screen, and padded enough that a knock in a bag is cushioned. Neither of those is visible in photos, so read the reviews that mention scratches and fit. Be wary of sleeves that rely on a thin, non-padded lining for a Kindle going into a crowded backpack.
Features worth having
- Zipper vs open top. Zippers keep the Kindle inside if the bag is turned over. Open-top sleeves are faster but can let it slide out.
- Accessory pockets. The MoKo listings above mention inner pockets for chargers, a power bank, pens or earphones, and an elastic pen loop. Useful if you want a tidy tech pouch; it also adds bulk.
- Wrist strap or handle. Some pouches have a strap; helpful for hand carry.
- Exterior pocket. A place for a notepad or the dock cable.
- Pen holder for the Scribe. The Scribe's pen clings to the device with a magnet, and a bag is a good place to lose it. MoKo's Scribe sleeve listing includes an elastic pen holder.
When a sleeve is the right choice
| Situation | Sleeve? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You carry the Kindle in a backpack or tote with other things | Yes | Keeps keys and cables from scratching the screen. |
| You hate cases and read bare | Yes | Protection in transit, nothing on the device in the hand. |
| You commute or fly and want a second layer | Yes, with a slim case | A sleeve outside the case; check depth. |
| You read one-handed in bed and want grip | Not alone | A sleeve does nothing while you read; see the cover guide. |
| You want the Kindle to wake when you open a flap | No | That is a folio cover feature. |
| You buy for a child | Probably not alone | Kids models come with a cover; see the case guide. |
Using a sleeve and a case together
It is a common combination, and it works if the numbers add up. Add the case's thickness to the Kindle's (7.8 mm for the 2024 Paperwhite; 6.8 mm for the 2026), then compare with the sleeve's interior depth. If the case is a hard back with a flap, the sleeve's depth and its zipper clearance are the limiting factors, not the length. If you do not know the cased dimensions, measure them yourself with a ruler; sellers' sizes are approximate. A sleeve that is too tight on a cased Kindle can strain the cover's flap. If that is a concern, choose a sleeve marked for a larger tablet (8-inch rather than 6-7 inch), and accept that it will leave more slack. For Paperwhite-year fit on the case itself, see Paperwhite cases; for stand and dock notes, see the stand guide.
Listing red flags
- "6-inch" with no interior dimensions. That describes the screen, not the pouch.
- A giant compatibility list including phones, tablets and several Kindles; the list may be generous. Check the interior numbers yourself.
- Interior size missing or in only one unit. Look for both external and internal numbers.
- Reviews saying "tight" or "too small" for a model like yours. Search the reviews for your model's name.
- "Waterproof" wording without a rating. We have not seen a recognized rating on any sleeve listing we checked.
- Words suggesting Amazon approval. Third-party sleeves are third-party. We found no Amazon-branded sleeve while preparing this page, which is not proof there is none; check the Amazon listing.
How we researched this
This guide uses Amazon and retailer listings for the sleeves named (MoKo and kwmobile), Amazon device specifications and spec tables, and press coverage from WIRED, Engadget, The Verge and Digital Trends. We refreshed 2026 Paperwhite outer dimensions on October 19, 2026 against secondary reports of Amazon product data. Sleeve brands are named only because their listings gave interior dimensions we could use as examples; we are not recommending or ranking them, and we have not tested any. Interior sizes are as stated by sellers and may differ from real life. Margins are our arithmetic. To report a mistake, use our contact page; see also our editorial policy.
- Amazon.com listings for MoKo 6-7 inch Kindle sleeves (padded and nylon versions) and a kwmobile 6-inch neoprene pouch: stated sizes, compatibility lists, materials; checked October 2026.
- MoKo's Kindle Scribe 10.2-inch sleeve listing (Amazon.ca): interior size, pen holder.
- Amazon device listings and spec tables: 2022/2024 Kindle, 2024 Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Edition, 2018 Paperwhite, Oasis 10th generation.
- Xataka, Case Society Co, Read with Pro (Oct 2026): 2026 Paperwhite 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm and Signature ~229 g, citing Amazon product data (secondary; not Amazon US tech card pulled by us).
- WIRED, Engadget and The Verge (Oct 1, 2026): 2026 Kindle and Paperwhite thickness and weight; power button move.
- Digital Trends review of the 2024 Kindle: same size as 2022.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Kindle sleeve enough, or do I need a case?
A sleeve is enough if the Kindle mostly rides in a bag and you read it bare. It guards against scratches from keys and charger cables and softens light knocks, but it does nothing while you are reading. If you want something on the device while you read it (grip, a stand, a cover that wakes it), you want a case or folio cover. Many people use both: a slim case in the hand and a sleeve in the bag. See the Kindle case buying guide and the Kindle Paperwhite cover guide.
How do I match a Kindle sleeve to my Paperwhite size?
Compare the device's outer size with the sleeve's stated interior size and leave some margin (about a centimeter of spare length helps). The 2024 Paperwhite is 176.7 × 127.6 × 7.8 mm; the 2026 Paperwhite is 174.7 × 126.8 × 6.8 mm (secondary sources citing Amazon product data — see the size table). Two Amazon listings for "6-7 inch" sleeves state interiors of about 200 × 150 mm and 190 × 140 mm, which leave spare length by our arithmetic. A "6-inch" pouch with a 170 × 120 mm interior is shorter than either Paperwhite.
Will a sleeve made for a 6-inch Kindle fit a Paperwhite?
Not necessarily. A 6-inch label describes the screen, not the pouch. One neoprene "6-inch" pouch lists an interior of 6.7 × 4.7 in (170 × 120 mm), and a reviewer on that listing says it is a tight fit even for the 2018 Paperwhite, which is 167 × 116 mm. The 2021, 2024 and 2026 Paperwhites have a 7-inch (6.8-inch on the 2021 model) screen and are larger than that. Choose a sleeve that states 6-7 inch compatibility, or better, one that names your model and lists interior dimensions.
Sleeve vs folio cover: when is each enough?
A folio cover stays on while you read, protects the screen when closed, and usually adds auto wake/sleep; it must match your model year. A sleeve protects only in a bag and then gets out of the way, so it adds nothing in your hand and can often outlast a device upgrade if the interior still fits. If you hate cases and only need bag protection, a sleeve is enough. If you toss the Kindle into a backpack and also want a flap while reading, use both — or pick a folio and skip the sleeve. Details: sleeve vs case and the cover types page.
Can I put a Kindle that is already in a case into a sleeve?
Only if the sleeve is large enough for the device and the case together. Add the case's thickness and the folded flap to the device's outer size, then compare with the sleeve's interior width, height and depth. A padded sleeve with an interior depth of about 15 mm (as one nylon listing states) leaves modest room beyond a bare 7–8 mm Kindle. A thick folio may not fit. If you use both, buy the sleeve for the cased size, or pick one marked for a larger tablet.
Will a sleeve fit the 2026 Kindle and Paperwhite?
Thickness is unlikely to be the problem: both 2026 models are 6.8 mm thick (WIRED / Engadget). For the Paperwhite, secondary sources cite Amazon product data at 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm — slightly smaller in footprint than the 2024 model — so a "6-7 inch" sleeve that already fits a 2024 Paperwhite should have room, but we have not measured any sleeve against a 2026 device. One UK retailer lists the base Kindle at 152.7 × 107.9 × 6.8 mm; we could not confirm that against Amazon US. Leave margin and check the sleeve's stated interior.
Do Scribe and Oasis need different sleeve sizes than a Paperwhite?
Yes. The Oasis (10th gen) is short but wide at 159 × 141 mm, so its width is the number to check against a sleeve interior. The Scribe is a much larger device: 230 × 196 mm for the 2022/2024 models and 245 × 189 mm for the 2025 / Colorsoft Scribe. A "6-7 inch" Paperwhite sleeve will not fit a Scribe. See the size table and the Scribe case guide.
Does a sleeve protect against water?
Only as far as the seller says, and the claims differ. One nylon listing calls its exterior water-resistant and its zipper sealed, another describes anti-splash polyester, and a neoprene pouch listing calls its material water-resistant. None of that is a waterproof rating, and none replaces the Kindle's own rating (the 2024 and — per Amazon UK — 2026 Paperwhite are IPX8; the basic Kindle is not waterproof). Treat a sleeve as protection from drizzle and spills in a bag, not from submersion.
What sleeve works for a Kindle Scribe?
Scribe sleeves are scarcer, and the sizes differ by model year. One MoKo sleeve for the 10.2-inch Scribe (2022 and 2024) states an interior of 9.84 × 8.66 in (about 250 × 220 mm) and has an elastic pen holder. The 2022 and 2024 Scribes are 230 × 196 mm; the 2025 Scribe is 245 × 189 mm. We did not find a sleeve listing for the 2025 model to check, and the sleeve will not keep the pen magnetically attached. See the Scribe case styles and verify inner dimensions yourself.
Does it matter if my Kindle wakes up inside the sleeve?
A little. A sleeve has no magnet to put the Kindle to sleep, so it relies on the Kindle's own screen timeout, and a tight pouch could press the power button or touch the screen. We have no test of this, and the pressure depends on the fit and the model (the 2026 models move the power button to the right edge near the top, per The Verge). If it worries you, put the Kindle to sleep yourself before packing it, and choose a sleeve that is not too snug.
