Kindle Paperwhite Case: Pick the Right One for Your Model Year

Searching for a "Kindle Paperwhite case" is harder than it should be, because Amazon has sold several visibly different Paperwhite bodies under almost the same name. A case made for one will pinch, gap or block the buttons on another. This page sorts the choices by model year — including the redesigned 2026 Paperwhite — and shows which style suits how you read.
The short answer
- 2026 Paperwhite (ships Oct 28, 2026 in the US): buy only a case that names the 2026 model, or Amazon's new covers (knit fabric ASIN B0H6H9MM86 at $44.99 for 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft; covers announced from $39.99). Signature buyers who want built-in page buttons: Page-Turn Cover $79.99 (Signature only). Do not reuse a 2024 case — different footprint and power-button position. Skip "fits all generations" third-party titles until post-ship reviews exist.
- 2024 Paperwhite (12th gen, 7-inch): the widest third-party choice. Look for "12th Generation, 2024 release" in the title.
- 2021 Paperwhite (11th gen, 6.8-inch): plenty of cases and Amazon covers, but they are "11th generation only." Do not buy a 2024 case.
- 2018 or older: 2018 (10th gen, 6-inch) cases exist but stock is thinner. Older raised-bezel models need their own cases.
- Everyone: check the power button cutout, the USB-C cutout and auto sleep/wake. For rain or travel, remember IPX8 protects the device — a closed folio or pouch handles bag scrapes and mess (see travel and wet weather). Style details: Kindle case buying guide and the accessories hub.
Step 1: Identify your Paperwhite
People often describe their device as "my Paperwhite" or "the one from a few years ago," and then buy a case by name. Start instead from what you can see. Screen size and power button position are enough to separate the recent models:
- 6-inch screen, flush front, power button on the bottom edge: the 2018 model (10th generation).
- 6.8-inch screen, power button on the bottom edge: the 2021 model (11th generation), including its Signature Edition.
- 7-inch screen, power button on the bottom edge: the 2024 model (12th generation).
- 7-inch screen, power button on the right edge near the top: the new 2026 model.
For certainty, check the device information in Settings and the device list in your Amazon account, then match it to the "Generation" and "release" lines in the listing. Amazon's 2024 listing, for example, reads "Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) - 2024 release," and its 2018 technical sheet reads "10th Generation – 2018 release." A case listing should use the same wording. (Own a Kindle Scribe instead? It is a different, much larger device with a pen; see our Kindle Scribe case guide. Looking at Colorsoft? See Kindle Colorsoft case.)
Which case by model year
| Model | Screen | Size (W × H × D) | Weight | Official Amazon cover | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Paperwhite (new) | 7-inch | 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm | 204 g (229 g Signature, secondary sources) | Knit fabric cover $44.99 (2026 PW + Colorsoft only); covers announced from $39.99; Page-Turn Cover $79.99 Signature only | The 2026 model named in the title; power button on the right edge |
| 2024 Paperwhite (12th gen) | 7-inch | 127.6 × 176.7 × 7.8 mm | 211 g (214 g Signature) | Fabric cover listed as fitting the 2024 release only | "12th Generation, 2024 release"; mature third-party choice |
| 2021 Paperwhite (11th gen) | 6.8-inch | 124.6 × ~174–175 × 8.1 mm | 205 g (208 g Signature) | Fabric and leather covers listed as 11th generation only | "11th Generation, 2021 release" or "6.8-inch" |
| 2018 Paperwhite (10th gen) | 6-inch | 116 × 167 × 8.18 mm | 182 g (Wi-Fi) | Amazon sold covers at launch; stock varies today | "10th Generation, 2018 release" or "6-inch" |
| Before 2018 (2013–2015 models) | 6-inch, raised bezel | Different body; check the seller sheet | Varies | Mostly discontinued | Cases named for your exact generation; hard to verify |
The takeaway from the table is how little room for error there is. From 2024 to 2026 the footprint shrank by under a millimeter in width and about 2 mm in height, while thickness dropped from 7.8 mm to 6.8 mm — enough to make a hard 2024 shell the wrong buy. Soft covers forgive a millimeter or two; a hard shell does not.
2026 Paperwhite cases
Amazon announced the redesigned Paperwhite on October 1, 2026. In the US it is available to pre-order and is scheduled to ship on October 28. What a case buyer needs, checked October 20, 2026:
- Body: 7-inch screen, 126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm and 204 g for the standard model (size figures from Amazon product data as reported by Xataka, Case Society Co and Read with Pro; weight also in WIRED's launch coverage). Color wraps front to back with a flush display.
- Waterproofing: Amazon's UK product page rates it IPX8 — 2 metres of fresh water for 60 minutes — matching the 2018–2024 Paperwhite rating.
- Power button: moved from the bottom edge to the right edge near the top (The Verge). A case with the old cutout position is the wrong case.
- Amazon covers: Amazon's announcement lists covers from $39.99 in knit fabric, plant-based leather and pebbled premium leather; aluminum Signature models also get slim magnetic-attach covers. The knit fabric cover listing we checked (ASIN B0H6H9MM86) is $44.99, states it fits Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft 2026 releases only, offers Graphite / Seaglass Green / Fig, uses 100% recycled post-consumer polyester knit with a microfiber interior, and supports auto sleep/wake, magnetic closure, and charging with the cover on.
- Signature Edition: aluminum back, pogo pins for a $59.99 dock and the $79.99 Page-Turn Cover (Signature Editions only). Secondary sources put Signature weight at 229 g with the same footprint.
What we still could not confirm first-hand
We have not pulled the 126.8 × 174.7 mm figures from a live Amazon US technical card ourselves; they come from secondary write-ups that cite Amazon product data. We have not handled the device or any 2026 third-party case. Third-party fit reports from buyers who have received the US shipment will not exist until after October 28.
Practical advice: do not pre-buy a 2024 case "because it looks the same." Wait for a listing that names the 2026 model in the title, preferably with reviews from people who have received the device, or start with an Amazon cover made to the final specification. If you buy the Signature Edition, make sure the case does not cover the pogo pins unless you never plan to use the dock or the Page-Turn Cover. If you want page-turn buttons without a special cover, the $34.99 Kindle Click remote is a separate Bluetooth option that Amazon says works with all new Kindles and any Kindle from 2024 or later — see our page turner guide.

Amazon Page-Turn Cover (Signature only)
Checked October 20, 2026 on Amazon's US listing (ASIN B0H4WGJMPD):
- Price and release: $79.99; US pre-order, released October 28, 2026 (same day the 2026 Paperwhite ships).
- Fit: Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, 2026 releases only. It uses the Signature pogo pins; the standard (non-Signature) Paperwhite cannot use it.
- How it works: magnetic attach, physical forward/back buttons, no battery, pairing or charging. Button direction is configurable in Kindle settings. Folds back for one-handed reading; auto sleep/wake and magnetic closure.
- Materials and water: plant-based leather (Amazon states more than 70% renewable bio-materials, remainder polyurethane) with a plush microfiber interior. The listing rates both the Kindle and the cover IPX8 for splashes and rain. Colors listed: Graphite, Seaglass Green, Fig.
Compared with the $44.99 knit folio (fits standard and Signature 2026 Paperwhite plus Colorsoft), the Page-Turn Cover is a Signature-only accessory aimed at tactile page turns while keeping the slim profile. If you want page-turn buttons without that cover or without owning Signature, Amazon's $34.99 Kindle Click Bluetooth remote is a separate path — see our page turner guide. Cover vs case wording more generally: Kindle covers explained.
2024 Paperwhite (12th gen) cases
This is still the model with the most third-party choice today. It is 7-inch, 127.6 × 176.7 × 7.8 mm and 211 g, with the power button on the bottom edge. Amazon's own fabric cover for it is described by retailers as made from recycled polyester and water-safe, and as fitting the 2024 release only (including Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft models of that year on some listings). It can stay on while charging, per the same listings.
Third-party cases dominate Amazon's results for this model, and the common selling points are PU leather, magnetic closure, auto sleep/wake, a hardback shell, a stand, a hand strap and card slots. Prices are generally lower than Amazon's covers, and because the model has been on sale for a while, you can read reviews that mention fit and cutouts. Sort by most recent, then search the reviews for "fit," "tight," "button" and "charging."
Two things to watch. First, several 2024 Paperwhite listings also name the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition because the bodies are shared; that is fine if you own one, but the listing should name your exact model (our Kindle Colorsoft case guide covers the Colorsoft models separately). Second, this is the model most affected by the 2026 launch: some sellers may relabel or add the new model to an existing listing without checking, so make sure the title and the recent reviews agree. If you are deciding whether to buy a 2024 Paperwhite at all, our Paperwhite buying guide covers that choice.

2021 Paperwhite (11th gen) cases
The 2021 Paperwhite is 6.8-inch, about 124.6 mm wide and 8.1 mm thick, with a 205 g standard model and a 208 g Signature Edition. Published heights differ by a millimeter between sources (174.2 mm in some spec tables, 175.2 mm in PCWorld's review), another reminder that listings should name the generation instead of the dimensions.
Amazon's launch announcement mentioned leather, cork and fabric covers for the model, and Amazon's current fabric cover listing for it says the cover is for the 11th generation Paperwhite and Signature Edition and "will not fit prior generation Kindle devices." Third-party cases for 6.8-inch Paperwhites remain easy to find. The main trap is the near-identical 2024 listings: a case marked "6.8-inch" is for 2021, and one marked "7-inch" is for 2024. If a listing claims to fit both, be skeptical, since hard cases are cut to a single body.
If you own a 2021 Paperwhite and are thinking of upgrading, bear in mind that a new device means a new case. A good case on a working 2021 Kindle is cheaper than a new Kindle.

2018 and older Paperwhite cases
The 2018 Paperwhite (10th generation) is a 6-inch device, 167 × 116 × 8.18 mm and 182 g for the Wi-Fi model, and was the first Paperwhite rated IPX8. Cases for it are still sold, usually titled "10th Generation, 2018 release" or "6-inch." One 2018 review measured Amazon's cover at 119 g, so a folio can add well over half the weight of the device again, which is worth keeping in mind if you chose a Paperwhite for its lightness.
Paperwhites released before 2018 had a raised bezel rather than a flush front, and CNET noted the 2015 model shared its chassis with the 2013 one. They need cases designed for that body, and many listings are old and unreliable. If you have one, look for a case that names your exact generation and matches the ten-year-old shape, or consider whether upgrading makes more sense than a new accessory. In every older case, buy from a seller with a clear return window.
Case styles for the Paperwhite
Once you know the model year, style is mostly about how you read. Our general case styles comparison goes deeper; this version is tuned to the Paperwhite.
| Style | Protects the screen? | Auto sleep/wake | Best for | Paperwhite-specific watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic folio | Yes, when closed | Usually | Everyday carry, the default pick | Adds weight; confirm the USB-C cutout; check it folds back flat |
| Slim shell | No | No | People who dislike bulk and want edge protection | Hard shells are least forgiving on fit; screen is exposed in a bag |
| Strap or stand case (see also stands) | Usually, folio-style | Often | One-handed reading in bed or on a train | Straps vary in fit; extra weight on a device chosen for being light |
| Sleeve or pouch | Whole device inside | No | Kindle kept in a tote or backpack | Not for reading in; size to the model, not the name |
| Waterproof pouch | Whole device inside | No | Beach, pool, boat, heavy spray | Optional on an IPX8 Paperwhite; mainly for sand, salt and sunscreen, not a substitute for model-year fit |
| Kids / rugged | Often with a cover | Varies | Children and rough use | Amazon says the 2026 Kids versions include an artist-designed case |
Fabric covers are the lighter choice and cope better with damp hands, which suits a waterproof device. For how folios, back covers and magnetic-attach designs differ, see our Kindle covers explained page. Synthetic leather looks better and wipes clean, but quality varies. A Paperwhite already feels slim, so a folio that doubles the apparent thickness is worth a second thought if you read one-handed for long sessions.
Travel and wet weather
IPX8 on the Paperwhite is about the device surviving fresh-water immersion for a rated time and depth. A case answers different travel jobs: keeping the screen from keys in a backpack, giving you a grip on a train, and keeping sand or sunscreen off the bezel. When the forecast is heavy rain or you are heading somewhere damp:
- Rain and splash: the Kindle itself is the waterproof part. Prefer a folio or fabric cover that closes fully so the screen stays dry and clean; Amazon rates its 2026 Page-Turn Cover IPX8 as well, but that accessory is Signature-only.
- Beach, pool, boat: sand and salt are harder on ports and hinges than rain. A clear waterproof pouch that holds the whole Kindle (case on or off) is the usual extra layer; it is not a substitute for buying the right model-year fit.
- Bags and flights: a sleeve or a closed folio beats a bare shell in a stuffed tote. If you pre-ordered the 2026 Paperwhite (US ship date October 28, 2026), wait for a listing that names 2026 before packing a new case for the trip.
We are not tying this advice to any particular storm or region; treat it as evergreen travel hygiene for a waterproof e-reader. Style trade-offs stay in the table above.
Signature Edition and charging
The Signature Edition changes which case is safe in a few specific ways, so check these before buying.
- 2021 and 2024: the Signature Edition has Qi wireless charging, and standard models do not. If you use a Qi pad, look for a non-metal cover and a listing that says it works with wireless charging, then test with the case on. A cover that blocks the charge will usually not tell you so on the box.
- 2026: Launch coverage reports pogo pins for a dock sold separately and no Qi wireless charging on the Signature Edition. A case should leave the pins clear if you plan to use that dock or the Page-Turn Cover.
- Docks and stands: Amazon's docks are model-specific; see our Kindle stand guide.
- All models: cable charging is the baseline: USB-C on 2021 and later models, micro-USB on 2018 and older (see our Kindle charger guide). A cover with a tight, well-placed cutout is better than one that makes you remove the case every time.
Weight is the other point. The Signature Edition is a few grams heavier than the standard model in 2021 and 2024; for 2026, secondary sources put Signature at 229 g versus 204 g. For the full comparison of the editions, see the Signature section of our Paperwhite guide.
Do you need a screen protector?
Mostly not, and it depends on which case you choose. A folio that closes over the screen already does the job, so a protector adds little. A slim shell, which leaves the front exposed, or a Kindle that rides loose in a bag is where one might make sense. Amazon described the 2018 Paperwhite's screen as plastic and highly shatter-resistant and scratch-resistant, according to CNET's launch preview. We have not verified the equivalent claim for later models, so do not assume a protector is unnecessary or required.
If you buy one, buy a screen protector made for your model year and size, because a 6.8-inch protector will not cover a 7-inch screen. Read reviews for glare, bubbles and touch response, since a matte or glossy film can change the look of the glare-free display that people buy a Paperwhite for. We have not tested any, so we are not recommending one. For the 2026 model, the same "wait for a listing that names it" rule applies as for cases.
Listing red flags
- No generation or release year in the title. "Fits Kindle Paperwhite" is not specific enough.
- "Fits 6.8-inch and 7-inch" or any listing that spans several generations. No hard case is cut for that range.
- Titles that stack many generations (for example "13th/12th/11th Gen" or "2026/2024/2021" plus Colorsoft in one line). After the 2026 announcement, some third-party listings already claim multi-year fit before US buyers have the new device. That is a signal to slow down, not a reason to buy; we do not recommend or rank those brands.
- A 2024 case marketed for the 2026 model without reviews from real buyers who own the 2026 device (US ship date October 28, 2026).
- Reviews complaining of fit. Sort by recent and search for "too tight," "button" and "port."
- Stock images of the wrong device, such as a power button in the wrong place for your model.
- Language suggesting official approval. A third-party case is a third-party case, and a seller calling itself "official" or "Amazon certified" deserves extra suspicion. We do not use such language on this site either.
- A return window you cannot see. Fit is the main reason cases go back; buy where returns are easy.

How we researched this
This guide is built from Amazon's announcements, technical sheets and product pages, retailer listings for Amazon's own covers, and launch coverage from WIRED, The Verge and Gizmodo. We refreshed the 2026 size and waterproofing notes on October 19, 2026, re-checked Amazon's US Page-Turn Cover and knit cover listings on October 20, 2026, and on the afternoon of October 20 expanded the travel and wet-weather notes against the same IPX8 sources. Secondary reports still supply the 2026 footprint figures. We do not review products in a lab and we have not tested individual cases or handled the 2026 Paperwhite. We do not rank third-party cases or claim any is endorsed by Amazon. Where a figure is missing or sources disagree, we say so. Prices change, so treat them as a snapshot from October 20, 2026. To report a mistake, use our contact page; our approach is described in our editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best case for a Kindle Paperwhite?
There is no single best Kindle Paperwhite case, because "Paperwhite" covers several different bodies. The best case is the one whose listing names your exact model year and generation, closes magnetically with auto sleep/wake, and has clean cutouts for the power button and USB-C. After that it is a style choice: a folio for everyday carry, a slim shell if you dislike bulk, a strap case for one-handed reading. See the style table.
Will a 2024 Paperwhite case fit the 2026 Paperwhite?
No. Treat them as different bodies. The 2026 model is about 0.8 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter than the 2024 model (126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm versus 127.6 × 176.7 × 7.8 mm), the power button moved from the bottom edge to the right edge, and Amazon's own 2024 fabric cover is listed for the 2024 release only. Amazon's 2026 knit cover is listed for 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft releases only. See the 2026 section.
Does a 2021 Paperwhite case fit the 2024 model?
Not reliably. The 2021 model is 6.8-inch and about 124.6 mm wide; the 2024 model is 7-inch and 127.6 mm wide and slightly taller. Amazon's fabric cover for the 2021 models is listed as 11th generation only and "will not fit prior generation" devices, and the 2024 cover is listed for the 2024 release only. A hard shell is the least forgiving, and a few millimeters decide whether it snaps on.
Do I need a different Kindle Paperwhite case for the Signature Edition?
For 2021 and 2024, the Signature Edition shares its body with the standard Paperwhite, so cases are usually listed for both, but read the listing. For 2026, the Signature Edition has an aluminum back and pogo pins for the dock and the Page-Turn Cover; secondary sources put its weight at 229 g versus 204 g for the standard model, with the same footprint. A case that is not explicitly listed for the Signature Edition could block those pins. Amazon says the $79.99 Page-Turn Cover works with the Signature Edition only.
Can I wirelessly charge my Paperwhite with a case on?
Only the 2021 and 2024 Signature Editions support Qi wireless charging; standard models do not, and the 2026 Signature Edition uses pogo pins for a dock sold separately instead. If you do use Qi, thin non-metal covers are the safest bet, and a listing that says it works with wireless charging beats guesswork. For USB-C charging, look for a case with a port cutout, or one that Amazon says can stay on while charging.
Is a Kindle Paperwhite case worth it if the device is waterproof?
Waterproofing and protection are different jobs. IPX8 (2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes) covers immersion on the 2018, 2021, 2024 and — per Amazon's UK product page — 2026 Paperwhite models. That rating is not about scratches from keys in a bag or a drop onto a hard floor. A cover is optional if the Kindle stays at home and needed more if it travels.
Will a 2026 Paperwhite case fit Kindle Colorsoft?
Amazon's 2026 knit fabric cover listing names both Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft (2026 releases only). That does not mean every third-party Paperwhite case will fit Colorsoft. For Colorsoft-specific notes, see our Kindle Colorsoft case guide.
Do I need a waterproof case if my Paperwhite is already IPX8?
Usually no dedicated waterproof case. Amazon rates recent Paperwhites (including 2026 per the UK product page) IPX8 for fresh-water immersion. That covers rain and splash on the device itself; it does not cover sand, sunscreen, salt spray, or knocks in a bag. For wet or messy trips, a closed folio or a clear dry pouch over the whole device is the extra layer — see the waterproof-pouch row in case styles and travel and wet weather. A case is still useful for scratches and drops even when the Kindle itself is waterproof.
Should I use a screen protector or a case?
If you buy a folio that closes over the screen, a protector is mostly redundant. A shell or a bare Kindle in a bag is where a protector might help. See our screen protector note: buy only one listed for your model year, and be wary of anything that adds glare or hurts touch response.
Who can use the Amazon Page-Turn Cover?
Amazon's Page-Turn Cover (ASIN B0H4WGJMPD, $79.99) is listed for Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, 2026 releases only. It attaches magnetically over the Signature pogo pins, has physical page-turn buttons, needs no battery or pairing, and Amazon's listing rates the cover IPX8. The standard (non-Signature) 2026 Paperwhite cannot use it. If you want page-turn buttons without that cover, Amazon's $34.99 Kindle Click Bluetooth remote is a separate option — see our page turner guide.
Can I trust a third-party case that says it fits every Paperwhite generation?
Be skeptical. Hard cases are cut for one body. Listings that stack "13th/12th/11th Generation" or "2026/2024/2021" and Colorsoft in the same title are a red flag, especially before US buyers have received the 2026 device (ships October 28, 2026). Prefer a title that names your exact model year, then read the most recent reviews for fit and button cutouts. We do not rank or endorse third-party brands.
Are Amazon's own covers better than third-party cases?
They are easier to buy correctly, because they are made for a named model and sold with it in the title. They usually cost more. Third-party cases are plentiful for the 2021 and 2024 models, where fit and cutout problems show up in reviews you can read. For the 2026 Paperwhite before many third-party reviews exist, Amazon's covers are the less risky place to start.
How do I find out which Paperwhite I have?
Look at the screen size and the power button. A 6-inch Paperwhite with a flush front is the 2018 (10th gen) model; 6.8-inch is 2021 (11th gen); 7-inch with a bottom power button is 2024 (12th gen); a 7-inch with the power button on the right edge is the 2026 model. For certainty, check the device information in Settings and the device list in your Amazon account, then compare against the listing's generation and release year.
