Kindle Paperwhite Cover: Fit, Types and How to Choose

Facts checked October 19, 2026. Independent guide based on Amazon's announcements, product pages and launch coverage. We have not hands-on tested any cover mentioned, and we have not handled the 2026 Paperwhite.

Searching for a "Kindle Paperwhite cover" usually means two decisions at once: whether a folio flap, a back shell or a sleeve is the right construction, and whether the listing matches your exact Paperwhite year. This page answers both. It starts with what to check before you buy a Paperwhite cover, then compares cover types, and links out to model-year fit tables when you are ready to shop.

The short answer: what to check for a Paperwhite cover

  • Match the model year in the title. A 2024 cover does not fit the 2026 Paperwhite (different footprint and power-button position). Amazon's 2026 knit cover is $44.99 and lists 2026 Paperwhite + Colorsoft only; the lineup announcement still says covers from $39.99.
  • Decide flap vs no flap. A folio covers the screen in a bag and usually adds auto wake/sleep; a back shell adds grip without a flap; a sleeve protects only in transit.
  • Check cutouts and magnets. Power button (bottom edge on 2024, right edge on 2026), USB-C, and auto wake/sleep alignment. Signature buyers: do not block pogo pins if you want Amazon's dock or Page-Turn Cover.
  • Need year-by-year case tables? Use the Paperwhite case guide. Choosing the device itself? See which Paperwhite to buy. Everything else: accessories hub.

2026 vs 2024 Paperwhite cover fit

Most people typing "Kindle Paperwhite cover" own either a 2024 or a pre-order 2026 Paperwhite. Those two bodies are not interchangeable for covers. Checked October 19, 2026:

Outer sizes from Amazon's 2024 listing and from secondary reports of Amazon product data for 2026 (Xataka, Case Society Co, Read with Pro). We have not pulled the 2026 figures from a live Amazon US technical card ourselves. Checked October 19, 2026.

What we still could not confirm first-hand

We have not pulled the 126.8 × 174.7 mm figures from a live Amazon US technical card ourselves; they come from secondary write-ups that cite Amazon product data. We have not handled the 2026 Paperwhite or any 2026 third-party cover. US buyer fit reviews will not exist until after the October 28, 2026 ship date. IPX8 wording for 2026 is from Amazon's UK product page (2 m fresh water, 60 minutes).

Practical advice: do not reuse a 2024 cover on a 2026 Paperwhite. Wait for a listing that names the 2026 model, or start with Amazon's own 2026 cover. For year-by-year case styles, Signature pogo-pin notes and listing red flags, see the Kindle Paperwhite case guide.

Cover vs case: what the words mean

There is no official line between the two words, so it helps to be clear about how this site uses them. Amazon's own accessory announcement for the 2026 lineup uses "Kindle Covers" for what are, in effect, folios: knit fabric, plant-based leather and pebbled premium leather versions that "wrap fully around the device." Retailers and third-party sellers mostly say "case" for the same kind of product, plus shells, bumpers and sleeves. We cannot see what any individual shopper means when typing either word, so we treat them as overlapping and split by construction instead.

How this site uses the words. Product names vary by seller.
TypeWhat it isScreen covered?Auto wake/sleepWhere we cover it

Sleeve or pouchSeparate bag the Kindle slides intoYes, inside the sleeveNoKindle sleeve guide
Stand or holderSomething that props the Kindle up; not a protective productNot applicableNoKindle stand guide

Because the words overlap, the pages you land on from a search for either term will repeat some basics. We keep the model-year fit tables on the Paperwhite case and case pages and the construction comparison here, so the two do not say the same thing twice.

Three Kindle cover constructions Schematic drawings of a full-wrap folio with a front flap, a back cover that leaves the screen open, and a slim cover that attaches to the back of the device with magnets. Our own schematic, not drawn to scale and not based on any specific product. The dashed outline on the folio marks where the Kindle sits; the magnetic-attach version shows where magnets typically sit between the cover and the device back.

A four-step way to choose

Instead of starting from a list of products, narrow in layers, from the choice that matters most to the one that matters least:

  1. Coverage: flap over the screen or not. This decides how the Kindle behaves in a bag.
  2. Material: fabric, synthetic leather, plant-based leather or premium leather. This decides feel, weight and how it ages.
  3. Features: auto wake/sleep, a stand mode, a strap, a pen holder (Scribe), and charging or accessory compatibility.
  4. Model fit: the exact model year in the listing title. This is the step most likely to cause a return, and it lives on the model guides.

Step 1: Full-wrap folio vs back cover

The biggest decision is whether anything closes over the screen. A folio protects it; a back cover protects everything else and gets out of the way.

General comparison of constructions. Individual products vary and these are our reasoning, not test results.

Drop protectionDepends on the shell behind the KindleDepends on the magnets and the thin cover; reviewers on one Amazon Scribe listing are split on gripEdges and back covered, screen not
Auto wake/sleepUsuallyUsuallyNo
Best forEveryday bag carryPeople who want thin and lightGrip and scratches at home

One note on drops: no cover can promise protection, and we have no drop tests. The practical difference is that a snap-in or wrap-around design holds the Kindle through its own frame, while a magnetic-attach design relies on magnets alone. Amazon's own wording on its Scribe folio listing is that the device "magnetically attaches to a slim folio, rather than snapping into a plastic back like a traditional Kindle cover." That is a deliberate trade for thinness, and it is why some reviewers on that listing say the grip is not secure enough.

Step 2: Fabric, synthetic, plant-based or leather

The second layer is how it feels in the hand. These are general trade-offs, not rankings.

General comparison. Material labels vary by seller; check the listing.
MaterialWhat to expectWatch out for
Fabric (knit, nylon, recycled polyester)Light and soft. Amazon's 2024 Paperwhite fabric cover is described as recycled polyester and "water-safe," and the 2026 lineup has a knit fabric option at $44.99 on the listing we checked.Less rigid; corner protection depends on the frame inside.
Synthetic ("PU") leatherThe most common third-party material. Wipes clean, looks like leather, usually the lowest price.Quality varies widely, from well-finished to flaky or smelly in some reviews. Check recent reviews.
Plant-based leatherAmazon's Scribe folio is described as more than 70% renewable bio-materials with polyurethane for the rest. Amazon also sells plant-based covers for the 2026 lineup. Not the same as real leather; "plant-based" says little about durability.
Premium (pebbled) leatherAmazon's top-priced covers, and for the Scribe the Executive Folio ($139.99 on the listing we checked), described as full-grain pebbled leather.Highest price; some reviewers on those listings say it feels like PU, so the label alone is a poor guide.

If you are on the fence, ask what you will actually notice. A cover that is a few grams lighter matters every day if you hold a Kindle in one hand in bed, whereas the difference between synthetic and plant-based leather matters mostly in how it looks after a year. We cannot tell you which one lasts longer, because we have not tested any.

Step 3: Auto wake/sleep and other features

Magnetic-attach vs snap-in

This is the cover-specific question that most buyers do not realize they are answering. In the 2026 lineup Amazon sells two constructions. For the plastic models, its covers "wrap fully around the device," per Amazon's announcement. For the aluminum models, it sells "slim magnetic-attach covers." The Verge notes the aluminum 6-inch Kindle can magnetically attach to a folio case priced at $49.99.

The practical effect is on how the Kindle comes out of the cover. A snap-in or wrap design takes some effort to remove; a magnetic-attach design lifts off. That is convenient for taking the Kindle out and potentially a risk if the magnets are weak or the Kindle is dropped. For the Scribe, a magnetic folio also puts a second magnet near the pen's writing area, and reviewers on one 2025 folio listing report pen interference when the cover is folded back (anecdotal, not tested). If you write on your Kindle, read the Scribe magnets section.

Amazon's own covers

As of October 19, 2026, here is what we could verify from Amazon and press coverage:

Third-party covers are cheaper and far more varied. Because the words overlap, the same listings appear whether you search "Kindle cover" or "Kindle case." We name no third-party winners; see our Amazon vs third-party section for how we think about it. The 2026 Paperwhite ships October 28, 2026, so listings for it are still early.

How we researched this

This guide uses Amazon's October 1, 2026 lineup announcement, Amazon.com listings, retailer listings for Amazon's 2024 fabric cover, Amazon UK's 2026 Paperwhite product page, and coverage from The Verge, WIRED and Engadget. We refreshed Paperwhite cover fit notes on October 19, 2026. We have not tested any cover and do not rank third-party products. Price figures are snapshots from October 19, 2026. Where terms overlap or sources conflict, we say so. To report a mistake, use our contact page; our approach is described in the editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 2024 Kindle Paperwhite cover fit the 2026 Paperwhite?

No. Treat them as different bodies. The 2026 Paperwhite is about 0.8 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter than the 2024 model (126.8 × 174.7 × 6.8 mm versus 127.6 × 176.7 × 7.8 mm, secondary sources citing Amazon product data), the power button moved from the bottom edge to the right edge, and Amazon's own 2024 fabric cover is listed for the 2024 release only. Amazon's 2026 knit cover (ASIN B0H6H9MM86, $44.99) is listed for 2026 Paperwhite and Colorsoft releases only. See 2026 vs 2024 Paperwhite cover fit.

Is a Kindle cover the same thing as a Kindle case?

Not formally. There is no industry standard, and sellers use both words for the same products. Amazon calls its own folios "Kindle Covers," while most third-party listings say "case." On this site, "cover" means a folio-style product with a front flap that closes over the screen, and "case" is the wider family that also includes back shells, bumpers and sleeves. If you are choosing by model year for a Paperwhite, start with the Kindle Paperwhite case guide; if you are choosing between a flap and no flap, this page is the right one. The general Kindle case buying guide covers fit red flags for every Kindle.

Will a 2026 Paperwhite cover fit Kindle Colorsoft?

Amazon's 2026 knit fabric cover listing names both Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft (2026 releases only). That does not mean every third-party Paperwhite cover will fit Colorsoft. For Colorsoft-specific notes, see our Kindle Colorsoft case guide.

Do I need a cover if my Kindle is waterproof?

Water rating and scratch protection are different things. Amazon's 2018, 2021 and 2024 Paperwhite models are rated IPX8 (2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes), and Amazon's UK product page rates the 2026 Paperwhite the same way. A cover does not add to that. What a front flap adds is protection for the screen against keys, pens and corners in a bag. If your Kindle lives at home, you may want nothing, or just a back shell for grip.

What is auto wake/sleep, and does every cover have it?

Auto wake/sleep means the Kindle wakes when you open the cover and goes to sleep when you close it. Amazon describes its own covers as doing this, and most folio-style third-party listings advertise it too. Back shells and sleeves generally do not have it, because they have no flap to trigger it. It is a convenience, not a necessity: the Kindle sleeps by itself after a timeout. Check that "auto wake/sleep" appears in the listing for your exact model, and do not assume a cover made for another model year has the magnet in the right place.

Is a full-wrap folio better than a back cover?

It depends on the risk you are trying to avoid. A folio protects the screen when closed and keeps dust and pocket debris off it. A back cover (a shell) leaves the screen open, so it adds grip and edge protection without a flap in your way, but it does nothing for a screen in a bag. Neither is better in general. If your Kindle travels in a bag with other things, a folio makes more sense; if it mostly sits on a nightstand and you want something to hold on to, a shell might.

Can I charge my Kindle on a dock or wirelessly with a cover on?

Sometimes, and the limit is in the dock's specification. Amazon's wireless charging dock for the 2022 and 2024 Signature Editions and the Colorsoft Signature Edition says it charges with a case up to 4 mm thick, in portrait mode, and its reviews show mixed experiences when a case is on. The 2026 Signature Editions use pogo pins on the back for Amazon's $59.99 dock and $79.99 Page-Turn Cover, so a cover that blocks those pins also blocks those accessories. See our Kindle stand guide for more on docks.

Is plant-based leather the same as leather?

No. Amazon describes its plant-based leather folio for the Scribe as made from more than 70% renewable bio-materials, with the remainder polyurethane, so it is a synthetic-leaning material. Amazon separately sells "premium leather" or pebbled leather covers described as leather (its Scribe Executive Folio is described as full-grain pebbled leather). Third-party "PU leather" is a polyurethane coating. Reviewers on some listings say premium-priced covers feel like PU, so the label alone is a poor guide. Read the material line, and the recent reviews that mention it.

Will a cover make my Kindle much heavier?

It adds weight, and how much varies by product, which is why we avoid giving a single number. Amazon's weights for the bare devices are a useful baseline: about 158 g for the 2022 and 2024 Kindle, 211 g for the 2024 Paperwhite, 219 g for the Colorsoft Signature Edition, and WIRED reports 204 g for the 2026 Paperwhite (Signature about 229 g from secondary sources). Some Amazon reviewers say an official cover makes a Paperwhite feel noticeably heavier. If weight matters, look for the cover's own weight in the listing, or choose a back cover or a slim magnetic-attach folio.
